Open letter to South Burlington, VT residents. Ask for 'Clean City' goals and vision in city plan.

Subject: Add 'Clean City' vision and goal to the Draft 2016 comprehensive plan-City of South Burlington.

Hello, residents of South Burlington,

As you know, the city of South Burlington has released the Draft 2016 SB Comprehensive Plan to set goals and broad policies for the future of the community. Within this draft plan, on page 1-1, under the heading Vision & Goals, there is a sub heading titled Green & Clean that speaks to land conservation and reducing energy consumption. (The draft plan can be viewed on the SB web site @ http://www.sburl.com/ )

Will you join me in asking the planning commission to consider adding this statement: “Facilitate Clean City image with a multi-faceted approach toward litter prevention and year round clean up."?

Do you share my vision of South Burlington becoming the signature image of a clean city?  I encourage you to send an email to Cathyann LaRose – clarose@sburl.com asking her to share this request with the planning commission. Requests must be received by Oct 10.

Request to SB Planning Commission members: Please consider including in the Comprehensive draft plan, under Vision & Goals, Green & Clean (page 1-1), this statement, “Facilitate Clean City image with a multi-faceted approach toward litter prevention and year round clean up”.

Supporting argument for including the statement in the SB comprehensive plan.
Littering will be difficult to stop until we recognize it as a serious problem.  Note: SB residents collected 2.3 tons of bagged trash on Green Up Day 2015. I estimate one ton of litter at 20,000 visible items. I consider 2.3 tons of littered trash accumulating on the ground in our city, for up to one year, to be a serious problem. The city can implement strategies to augment Green Up Day, to help make SB the cleanest city in the country, year round. Reference this posting http://www.litterwithastorytotell.blogspot.com/2015/09/our-citys-image-of-today-builds-brand.html for specific suggested strategies to meet the goal of a clean city.

It is easy to envision that a litter free community would be a social and economic benefit to South Burlington.

A multi-faceted approach is necessary to maintain a litter free community.  When education (information, knowledge), enforcement, and engineering (making it easy and convenient) are integrated, attitude and behavior change are more likely to occur simultaneously.

Do we want South Burlington to be a different place, altogether?  Let's set a vision and goal of a litter free South Burlington. Then we can implement strategies that will make our 'place' stand out as being the best - signature image of a clean city.

Sincerely,
Bernie Paquette
