Beware the Litter Ides of March

In William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, Caesar is warned to "beware the Ides of March." According to National Geographic News, “The phrase came to represent a specific day of abrupt change that set off a ripple of repercussions throughout Roman society and beyond.”

In South Burlington’s Green and Clean Business Journal, local businesses are hereby warned snow will not provide a pleasant uniform landscape for much longer. Beneath the March meltdown amidst sleeping flower bulbs and dormant flower bushes and grasses are multitudes and scatterings of accumulated litter. Although frigid temperatures may forestall attending to landscape plantings, picking up coffee cups, shreds of paper, and other trash require no particular temperature. The best response to seeing litter is to pick it up and dispose it.

Can South Burlington businesses build a March Madness legacy by organizing each their teams to slam dump the promotion of environment and avoid community degradation – can they clean up the outside as well as the inside of their establishments?

A call to action on the Ides of March may not be able to alter mud season, but could change how we view our environment and our storefronts. Cleaning up our businesses parking lots, greenery spaces, and sidewalk areas promptly after snowmelts in March could set off repercussions throughout our community making for a more inviting place to visit and shop.

Beware the ugliness of big city indifference. Make your business Green and Clean and litter free from the sidewalk right up to the front door of your establishment.
