Litter Picking is an
All Season Sport.
The Blue Bin
Affair
What behaviors do we need to change to become a Green and Clean community?
One critical
behavior affecting the cleanliness of South Burlington ironically is our
recycling diligence. I and other litter pickers have come to notice that trash
day (the day folks put their trash and recyclables next to the curb) has a
causal effect on litter spikes. Unfortunately, many recycle bins (typically
blue or green bins) do not have covers. Once placed at the curb with recyclables
in them, the opportunity for wind driven litter is high.
What can we do to prevent this unintentional cause of litter?
Placing a small sheet of plywood over the bin is one idea, though not practical for all folks. Requesting the trash hauler provide a covered (and larger) recycled materials container is another option. What else would you suggest to help derail this litter producing circumstance? Please send me your suggestions.

Some litter is from that, but in my litter picking I have found that a lot is just out right thrown or left in the evironment. We do not have curb side service for recycling. We have drop off locations in different parts of town. I have noticed there, that if the recycables are not bagged properly then the wind can blow them everywhere.
